By Oklahoma State Law, the school nurse or other designated school employee may administer a prescription or non-prescription medication to a student during the school day. A prescription medication must be contained in its current prescription vial that is labeled for the appropriate child, with the current date, medication dosage, name of the medication, prescribing physician, and when it is to be given.

Please do not send prescription or non prescription medication in a baggie, envelope, miscellaneous bottle, or any other improper container because it will not be given.

ALL students receiving prescription medication at school MUST have a current medication authorization and a written order from the physician. The label on the bottle must be correct with nothing crossed out or altered. The amount on the bottle is what will be distributed. Therefore, if your child is supposed to take a different amount than stated on the bottle you must provide a corrected label with the exact amount to be given. The name of the student on the medication label is the only student that will be given that medication. Thus, siblings can not share prescription medication. For a student to carry an inhaler or epi-pen please complete the authorization for medication and provide a written statement from physician stating that the student is capable of self administration of the medication. Please provide emergency supply for the school and send with the intact pharmacy label attached to the box at all times.

Nebulizer Treatments
In an attempt to limit the exposure of  aerosolized respiratory droplets during a nebulized  treatment, there will be NO nebulizer treatments performed at school.

The use of over the counter medication will only be dispensed if deemed medically necessary and may need documentation in writing by a student’s physician. A current medication authorization form MUST also be on file.  Medications need to be aspirin-free, sealed, and non-expired. (Please note that only the minimal amount of medication will be given as directed on the bottle. The recommended dose per the manufacturer will not be altered).

“In accordance with standards of nursing practice, school nurses may refuse to administer any medication that, based on the nurse’s professional judgment has the potential to cause harm. This may include medications that exceed recommended dosages.” OSDH School Nurse Manual.  

The school does not provide any medication. If possible, please schedule medication doses so they can be given at home. These procedures are for the protection of your child.
