General Education Development (GED)
Eligibility:
The state of Oklahoma requires you to be at least 16 years of age to take the GED, although 16 and 17 year olds need to receive signed approval from their guardians and an official from their school district. Additionally, you must be a resident of Oklahoma and not hold your high school diploma or be currently enrolled in high school. If you possess a disability that you believe will hinder you while taking the GED tests, the Department of Education offers accommodations based on your circumstances. You might be able to receive extra testing time or use a scribe, based on your disability.
To sign up to take the GED exams, you need to visit your local testing center, fill out an application and show proof of age and residency. The state recommends bringing a government-issued ID, such as a driver's license. Testing schedules and fees vary from center to center.
GED Exam Structure:
Five subtests make up the GED exams: writing, social studies, reading, science and mathematics. While the majority of the exam is in multiple-choice format, the writing section includes an essay. The mathematics subtest includes two sections: one where calculators are allowed, and one without the devices. The GED tests take about seven hours to complete. Oklahoma also offers Spanish-language test versions at some of its testing centers.
